Apple faces new problem

Apple said it sold 31.2 million iPhones, a record for the June quarter, compared to 26 million last year. But profit was down 22% from the same period a year earlier as its profit margins shrank to 36.98% from 42.8%.From BBC

It appeared directly in China. More details here.

Apple sold 14% fewer iPads in the quarter that ended June 30 than during the same stretch in 2012, while the revenue it earned from those sales plummeted by 27%.

Analysts tied the decline in revenue to the iPad Mini, Apple's smaller, lower-priced tablet that has significantly cannibalized sales of the pricier, 9.7-in. original. But ironically, they urged Apple to reduce prices of the Mini even more.

The iPad Mini now starts at $329 for a 16GB model, with prices climbing in $100 increments as the storage space doubles to 32GB, then again to 64GB.

Cutting the price may be a risk -- it would further depress ASPs and result in lower margins for Apple -- but the analysts agreed that it's a move the Cupertino, Calif. company should make if it wants to stay in the game as it faces ever-fiercer competition.

"They need to take big steps to show there's a difference between an iPad Mini and a Nexus 7," said Gottheil, referring to Google's flagship 7-in. tablet. Earlier today, Google unveiled the newest Nexus 7, and said the high-resolution tablet -- it uses a 1920 x 1200-pixel display, almost triple the pixel count of the Mini's 1024 X 768 screen -- would sell for $229 (16GB) and $269 (32GB).

"If Apple can come up with a Retina iPad Mini at $329, and can lower the price of the existing Mini to $249, and do that profitably, that's a killer," said Gottheil.

"Apple's margin declines are permanent," said Baker, echoing Gottheil in arguing that Apple must first acknowledge as much, then realize that cutting prices won't be its doom. "After all, they're so much better than anyone else in hardware, even now."

Samsung Galaxy S4 Review Again

2013 is a new year though and the competition figures to be extremely stiff. HTC is rumored to be coming out with a larger version of its HTC One called the HTC One Max, Sony recently announced the Xperia Z Ultra, a massive device that has a display over 6-inches. However, the Galaxy Note 3 will have an internal struggle as well, a struggle with the Galaxy S4.

Galaxy S4 Specifications

We’ve looked at TouchWiz once or twice before. To summarize our thoughts, TouchWiz is good. It’s the first manufacturer skin that we like and don’t mind using. It adds a lot of neat features you won’t find anywhere else.

To be honest, this review was more nitpicky than we anticipated. There’s little wrong with the Galaxy S4. The screen could be smaller. The buttons could be capacitive. TouchWiz could remove some of the bloatware. Other than that, this is a superb phone. The hardware, software, processing power, and screen are amazing.

Samsung Galaxy Note III specs emerge

As it turns out, the source of the pictures realized that the original shots were very hard to make out. So back he went and this time was able to snap a picture that didn't make us cringe while looking at it. Despite the better quality of the picture, truth is that it looks like a large screened device, but we really can't make out any distinctive marks that would clearly mark this as a Samsung Galaxy Note III.

While some specs for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note III smartphone have been confirmed on the vendor’s own website, the upcoming new flagship phablet is still a mystery for the most part. Samsung’s site says the Note III will feature a full HD 1,080 x 1,920-pixel display and an ARM11 processor, and earlier rumors have laid out a variety of other specs including 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and improved S Pen support. Now, a new report from Dutch site Sim Only Radar claims the phone-tablet hybrid will also feature a dedicated camera button, a xenon flash and two processor options — either a new Exynos 5 Octa chipset or a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor — possibly depending on region. The report also claims the Galaxy Note III will feature a 5.7-inch display; earlier rumors have been mixed, bouncing back and forth between a 6-inch panel and a 5.7-inch screen.

In terms of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date the trail is pretty cold at the moment with "later this year" all we have to go on for now.

Samsung executive J.K. Shin has said the Note 3 will arrive at IFA in September, although we're still waiting on an official comment from Samsung itself.

How to Connect a Computer to a TV

One way to show digital pictures and video to friends and family is for all to huddle around the home computer screen. Alternatively, you can connect the computer to a television and send the images to the TV. Technology also exists to network a TV and a computer in the other direction, so that you can watch television programs on your laptop or PC. Each method involves pros and cons including some setup challenges.

Now that you’re armed with all of the information you need for your TV-computer hook-up. Here comes the fun part. If you have a relatively new flat screen TV, just plug in the cable to each respective spot, and then change the input to reflect what spot it is on your TV. For example, if you were changing the input from live TV to a DVD, you’d have to select another option on your screen. Well, when you connect your computer to your TV, another input option will appear. The names of these options are different for almost every TV, but your TV’s manual will help, as will a quick Google search!

Earlier I mentioned that you can hook up an old computer to your TV and use it as a home theatre. This is easy to set up and even some of the oldest computers can handle playing a video no problem. If you’re interested in this sort of thing, check out XBMC. They make free software that looks and works incredible!

Google and Microsoft earnings disappoint

For a long time,Google and Microsoft have been earning too much in technology industry. But now,two of the world's biggest technology companies have badly missed earnings expectations for the second quarter.

Google reported profits of $9.7bn (£6.4bn), up 16% from a year ago but less than analysts were expecting.Microsoft made $4.5bn in the second quarter, but announced that it would take a $900m charge relating to poor sales of its Surface tablet. This is from BBC news.

Shares in both companies fell by more than 4% in after-hours trading.

Declining PC sales - which recently saw their longest slide in five years - have hurt Microsoft's efforts to boost its business with the sale of its Windows 8 operating software.

Last week, the company also announced that it would cut the price of its Surface tablet amid sluggish sales.

Google Said to Weigh Supplying TV Channels - From NY Times

Foreshadowing what could someday be a new challenge to cable and satellite television providers, Google has begun talks with major media companies about licensing TV channels for an Internet cable service, according to people with direct knowledge of the meetings.

No deals appear imminent. But Google’s discussions with channel owners are a sign of the newfound race to sell cable-like services via the Internet, creating an alternative to the current cable packages that 100 million American households receive from companies like Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

Intel is working on one such service, and companies like Sony and Google have previously shown interest in the same idea, colloquially called an “over the top” service because the television channels would ride on top of existing broadband lines.

Google’s renewed push was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday afternoon. A Google spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The people with direct knowledge of the meetings between Google and the channel owners said the talks were preliminary in nature. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by their employers to speak.

In Kansas City, Google already sells a traditional package of cable channels as part of Google Fiber, its superfast broadband service. The company has plans to expand Google Fiber to other cities, but what it is proposing in its talks with channel owners is something different: an easy-to-use subscription service that would stream a bundle of live channels and on-demand shows, replacing the cable bundles that most households pay for.

Intel is trying to create something similar, but it has run into roadblocks set up by Time Warner Cable and other incumbent television distributors.

Some contracts between existing distributors and channel owners include clauses that expressly prohibit the channels to be sold to an Internet distributor like Intel or Google, while other contracts merely discourage such competition by including financial incentives or penalties.

Another challenge involves channel owners like The Walt Disney Company and Viacom, who could stand to benefit or suffer greatly from “over the top,” depending on how it all shakes out. Some owners doubt that there is much of a market for cable via the Internet in the first place.

If a market for it does develop, existing distributors could suddenly compete directly in markets all across the country. Comcast has quietly been working on an “over the top” service for well over a year.

iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 display in Imagination

iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 will include a Super HD screen display and cameraaccording to new reports in December 2012. The China Times says a 'Touch On Display' panel is being developed by Taiwanese supplier Innolux with 10 point multi-touch and a 0.5mm thickness. Apparently the site spoke to sources inside Apple's supply chain.

It's been reported that the handset would have a Retina+ Sharp IGZO display, which would have a 1080p Full HD resolution. It's also been widely reported that Apple could introduce two handset sizes as it seeks to compete with the plethora of Android devices now on the market.

Rumours in late May 2013 pointed to the iPhone 5S having double the screen resolution of the iPhone 5 - raising the pixel count to 1.5 million and making the bezel extremely thin.

This would be a vast improvement over the 727,040 pixels found in the current iPhone 5 Retina display, which stands at 640 x 1,136 resolution and 326 pixels per inch.

Samsung Delays Debut Tizen Phone to Fourth Quarter

The first phone using the upstart Tizen operating system was originally slated to launch in July or August, but has been pushed back to the fourth quarter. Samsung Galaxy S4 sales top 20 million units. The sales mark, if it's official, would mean that Samsung is selling Galaxy S4 units 1.7 times faster than its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. Samsung's falling stock price over the past month down over 14% ? was just the latest example of a smartphone maker to see its once high-flying shares tumble.

Tizen represents a new smartphone operating system that gives Samsung a platform that it has more control over. If successful, it could eventually allow the company to wean itself off of its dependence on Android, even though its most successful products, the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note and Tab lines, are powered by Google’s OS. While open, Samsung and Intel have taken the lead on the development of the operating system.

Tizen was initially supposed to launch with Japan‘s NTT Docomo, as well as with France‘s Orange. No U.S. carrier has committed to Tizen, although Sprint is part of the alliance that is helping to develop the operating system. SoftBank and Sprint could ultimately carry the phones, according to one person familiar with Tizen’s development.

The Tizen consortium is aiming to move quicker than before, conscious of the mistakes that hobbled it in the past.
Rather than development by committee, the work on Tizen is largely led by a steering group compromised of employees of Intel and Samsung. The Tizen Association is a group filled with members who also contribute code and suggestions, but the core development is under the guidance of the two companies.
